TIME 011 – Weena in the Water | The Time Machine
(Verse 1) The Traveller heard a cry beside the current running strong, And saw a fragile Eloi swept helplessly along. The others watched in silence from the safety of the shore, As though the drowning figure meant no tragedy or more. (Verse 2) He plunged into the water and he fought against the flow, Then seized the little stranger as the river dragged her low. He bore her back to safety while the others merely stared, And wondered at a people who had neither moved nor cared. (Chorus) Weena clung beside him with a trust that seemed so true, A warmth of human feeling that the distant future knew. Among the smiling Eloi, where compassion seemed to part, She gave the distant future one familiar human heart. (Verse 3) She followed him thereafter with a trust both warm and mild, Not merely as an Eloi, but as something like a child. She brought him little flowers and remained close by his side, While all the easy others drifted on with careless pride. (Verse 4) Her gratitude disturbed him more than theories ever could, For kindness still survived there, though misunderstood. Beneath the faded culture and the weakness of her kind, He found in Weena something that the ages left behind. (Chorus) Weena clung beside him with a trust that seemed so true, A warmth of human feeling that the distant future knew. Among the smiling Eloi, where compassion seemed to part, She gave the distant future one familiar human heart. (Bridge) The future had seemed distant, like a specimen to read, A puzzle born of ages, shaped by comfort, want and need. But Weena made it personal, and changed the distant view, For now one life among them had become a life he knew. (Outro) The river moved behind them through the softly fading light, While Weena stayed beside him as the shadows gathered night. And in that far-off future, strange and broken from the start, The Traveller found in Weena one enduring human heart.
