She Sees The One

V6-MINI

There are people who will help you When the calling says they should, And there are those who simply notice Where they might be doing good. Rachel never needs a reason, Never asks what she will gain, She just smiles and says, “Of course I will,” And sits down to play again. I've called on her so many times, “Could you help?” “Could you step in?” And somehow there's that same warm smile Before I can begin. At the piano or in Relief Society, Wherever there is need, She doesn't only teach the gospel— She lives what she believes. She sees the one, The one who might be hurting, The one who's almost out the door, The one who needs reminding They're worth reaching for. No checklist and no obligation, No praise for what she's done— She simply follows where Christ leads, And somehow sees the one. There was a time my heart was hurting More than people understood, When something I had loved so deeply Didn't end the way it should. Then one Sunday came her family With a simple gift for me— A little rose made out of chocolate And love I still can see. That rose is tucked inside a plant now In our living room today, A little daily testimony That love can choose to stay. Not because somebody assigned them, Not a duty to fulfill— They came because they missed me, And that rose reminds me still. She sees the one, The one who might be hurting, The one who's almost out the door, The one who needs reminding They're worth reaching for. No checklist and no obligation, No praise for what she's done— She simply follows where Christ leads, And somehow sees the one. When Sundays there were difficult We'd stay for sacrament Then quietly slip out the door Before second hour meetings would begin. But one week as we headed out, I saw Rache'ls son come down the hall— Hurrying just to catch me Before I left at all. Maybe he didn't know the reason, Maybe words were hard to find, But something told him, “Go and reach her,” And he didn't stay behind. He hurried down and said hello, Then held the door for me— Such a tiny little moment That meant more than he could see. And Rick remembers with me How intentional he was— Sometimes heaven sends a message Through the smallest acts of love. I think he learned by watching What his mother always does: When the Spirit says, “Go find the one,” You go—because you trust. And then there was our backyard owl Who came one afternoon, And settled in our tree as though He planned to stay till full moon. I posted our surprise houseguest, So pleased he'd chosen us— Then Rachel said he'd tried their tree But hadn't liked it quite as much! She joked our home was warmer, So perhaps that's why he stayed, And I've smiled about that silly owl And the joke that Rachel made. But Rachel, if an owl could choose The kindest place to be, I'm pretty sure he'd pass our house And land there in your tree. Because you see the one, The one who might be hurting, The one who's almost out the door, The one who needs reminding They're worth reaching for. At a piano, in a hallway, With a rose—or just a smile— You make the gospel something lived, Not merely taught awhile. And maybe that's the greatest thing That anyone can do: To live so close to Jesus Christ That others see Him too. Rachel, I have seen Him In the quiet things you've done— In every willing “yes,” And every time You saw the one.
