Why I dislike religion

[Verse 1] You said the truth was printed On paper thin and gold But every doubt I whispered Got folded Filed Controlled They measured out my questions Like sins in ounces Grams I learned to fake my comfort While shaking in my hands [Chorus] That’s why I don’t kneel to these stories Why I don’t trust every book on the shelf If love needs a threat just to hold me I’d rather walk scared I’d rather be honest Than blame every bruise on myself [Verse 2] They painted lines on heaven Said only we fit in Smiled while talking gently About strangers steeped in “sin” I watched a friend stop breathing They said it’s “part of the plan” I stared right through the ceiling Felt nothing take my hand [Chorus] That’s why I don’t kneel to these stories Why I don’t chant every word that they sell If comfort means turning from torment I’d rather feel lost I’d rather stay restless Than sing while someone else burns in their hell [Bridge] If there’s something kind out there It won't need titles Thrones Or fear (oh) If there’s anything like grace It starts here It starts here [Chorus] So I won’t kneel hard to their stories Won’t crush my heart so it fits in a shell If wonder is bigger than rulebooks I’ll stumble in dark I’ll trust what I witness And build what I can On a truth I can tell
