Looking at this ugly cactus I never really got it Thought it was the stupidest present ever It was my birthday And you gave me this figurine I hated you for it What was I supposed to do with that? You just laughed and gave it to me Like there was some secret joke That I didn't understand But now I'm starting to see it Now that you're not here Maybe you knew something I couldn't see back then You were a cactus just like me Covered in all those spines Pushing everybody away Before they got too close Never letting anyone see What was hiding underneath And maybe that's why You gave that cactus to me Nobody could ever get close Not without getting scratched You'd push them away Before they had a chance To see the person underneath Living inside yourself Keeping your heart out of sight Never showing the world Who you really were Or what was on your mind But beneath those spines There was you So smart and charismatic Sometimes really funny Mostly just annoying You know I'm joking You'd probably laugh at that You were a cactus just like me Covered in all those spines Pushing everybody away Before they got too close Never letting anyone see What was hiding underneath And maybe that's why You gave that cactus to me Slowly I'm starting to understand How I'm a little bit like you I don't let people get too close I push them away too I hide behind my own spines Don't show what's in my heart And sometimes I wonder If you already knew Before I even had a clue The figurine looks different now I don't see an ugly cactus anymore It's my favorite present I ever got from you Not blue Not green Something in between The ugliest little cactus Became something I hold dear Because every time I look at it I somehow feel you near You were a cactus just like me And maybe I am just like you All those years I thought I didn't understand But maybe you were showing me Something I couldn't see Maybe underneath the spines There's more of me than I knew And maybe that's why You gave that cactus to me Looking at this little cactus I finally understand It wasn't the ugliest present It was something you saw in me Something I couldn't see myself I think you might have seen me Before I did And somehow I think you still do Even though you're gone
