3. Letters Never Sent
I wrote this down before I knew what it was for before the view became so clear that I could see the walls were there since I was three they called it home they called it safe they named the cage before your face could even know a different word for what we held for what occurred someone should have told you the noise was not the world someone should have shown you the flag was just a word someone close and quiet who knew and looked away left the letter unfinished and went about their day I found it on the table still sealed inside its skin I held it to the window and read what lay within it said hold on to something that no one gave a name it said the roots go deeper than anything they claimed these are the letters never sent the ones that cost too much the words that lived in careful hands and died without a touch I'm sending them regardless you'll know them when they land the shape of what was missing you'll know them when they land the shape of what was missing was always close at hand these are the letters never sent the ones they couldn't say the truth that sat behind the screen and quietly looked away but here it is in writing as plain as it can be the cage was always open you just could not see keep the thing they couldn't name keep the part that stayed the same through all of it through all the weight the root held on it's not too late I walked until I found it the place before the noise I set down what was given and claimed what was always mine and somewhere in the clearing I heard it soft and clear the sound of someone waking who'd always been right here these are the letters never sent I'm finishing them now for everyone who felt it but didn't know quite how to say the world is smaller than the ones who built the walls to say the light comes easy once you know it's yours once you know it's yours
