November, 1966. Point Pleasant, West Virginia. They said they saw a monster. They never stopped to ask... what he was running from. Four headlights cut through the TNT Two young couples saw something watching from the trees Ten feet tall with wings against the night And two burning eyes caught red in their lights They hit the gas, didn't wait around But I followed that car toward Point Pleasant town They swore I was hunting, swore I wanted them dead But I wasn't chasing them... I was chasing what lay ahead. I saw the river I heard the steel I knew what was coming But couldn't make them feel So I opened my wings And took to the sky Trying to tell them... Don't cross that bridge tonight. They called me Mothman Devil in the sky A shadow over Point Pleasant With two blood-red eyes Every time I showed myself They turned and ran away They thought that I had come for them I came to make them stay Call me monster Call me omen Call me whatever you like Just don't cross that bridge tonight Night after night I watched that little town From abandoned concrete bunkers with the darkness all around Police lights searched the backroads, rifles searched the trees Everybody hunting something nobody could believe Newspapers gave the nightmare wings Every frightened witness added something to the thing And the more I tried to warn them The more the legend grew They kept watching me... When they should've watched the bridge they drove across to get home. December came The river froze cold Christmas lights were shining And the bridge was growing old I circled above them But nobody knew Forty-six souls... And nothing I could do. DECEMBER FIFTEENTH NINETEEN SIXTY-SEVEN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC OVER THE OHIO STEEL STARTED SCREAMING THE ROAD GAVE WAY AND I WATCHED THAT SILVER BRIDGE FALL INTO THE GRAVE I TRIED TO WARN YOU I TRIED TO WARN YOU YOU RAN WHEN YOU SAW MY EYES YOU THOUGHT I BROUGHT DEATH EVERY TIME I TOOK FLIGHT I WASN'T BRINGING THE DARKNESS I WAS TRYING TO SHOW YOU THE NIGHT Forty-six never made it home. Forty-six names Left Christmas gifts unopened. And somewhere above that freezing river A monster watched the rescue lights... Knowing they'd remember his face. But never understand why he'd come. So call me Mothman Devil in the sky The shadow over Point Pleasant With those blood-red eyes Say I brought the warning Say I brought the end Turn me into whatever story Helps you sleep again But when something in the darkness Makes you terrified enough to hide Maybe ask what it's afraid of... Before you run inside. After that night They didn't see me like before. Maybe I left. Maybe my work was done. Or maybe... Some warnings only make sense after it's too late.
