V6

[Intro: accordion riff, bajo sexto, tuba] [Verse 1] Twenty twenty-four in May, along the Douglas line, a truck came up one body short, and the boss don't lose his freight. There's a tracker sewn inside her clothes, a little blinking light, so he sent four men in a Silverado to bring her back that night. [Verse 2] They found her by a dry arroyo, barefoot in the sand, eighteen and small and shaking, with no papers in her hand. She asked them, "Which of you's in charge?" like she'd lost her way somehow, and the jefe smiled and stepped up close. He isn't smiling now. [Chorus] So if you work the Douglas road, take a word from those who know: don't you chase that blinking light out where the creosote grows. Some cargo won't stay delivered, some debts get paid in kind, and the desert made a vampire, and she's working down the line. [Instrumental: accordion and requinto break] [Verse 3] They put a bullet through her shoulder and she never even fell, they sent ten more to find her and the ten came back as well, in a truck bed. So the boss drove up from Hermosillo to see it done himself, and that whole stretch of desert lit up orange, bright as hell. [Bridge: slower, accordion drops out, half-spoken] Now I'm the one who drove the load that brought her to the line, the last one of that crew still breathing, writing this tonight. They say she's up in Tucson now, with sisters and a home, that she's finished with the Douglas road and leaves the rest alone. But there's a blinking on my dashboard that I never put inside, and a girl out in my headlights, barefoot, and she smiles. [Final Chorus: full band returns, harder] So if you work the Douglas road, take a word from those who know: don't you chase that blinking light out where the creosote grows. Some cargo won't stay delivered, some debts get paid in kind, and the desert made a vampire, and she's working down the line. [Outro: accordion, final grito]
