Sugar-Coated Lies

1960's motown, 1960's soul, 1960's funk, girl group, upbeat, finger-snapping, and full of sass

[Intro – Guitar riff, tambourine hits]
(Clara Jean shouts)
Uh-huh! Sweet talk won’t fool me twice!

(Darlene & Lottie)
No more sugar-coated lies!

[Verse 1]
You said I’m the only one,
But baby, you been havin’ fun.
Walkin’ ‘round with that same old smile,
Sellin’ dreams with your easy style.
But honey, I read between those lines—
Your sweet talk’s just lemon and limes!
You can’t charm me with those eyes,
I’m done with sugar-coated lies!

[Chorus – Call & Response]
(Lead: Clara Jean) Sugar-coated lies!
(Backups) Ooooh, sweet disguise!
(Lead) All your talk was candy sweet,
(Backups) Melted fast in the summer heat!
(Lead) I won’t take another bite—
(All) Of your sugar-coated lies tonight!

[Verse 2]
You came around with a box of roses,
Sayin’ love’s what your heart proposes.
But every flower hides a thorn,
And I’m tired of being torn.
My mama told me, “Girl, be wise,”
Don’t fall for those sugar-coated lies!
Now I’m dancin’ out that door,
Don’t need your sweetness anymore!

[Chorus – Full Harmony]
Sugar-coated lies! (Ooooh, sweet disguise!)
Love ain’t love when it’s just pretend!
You can fool a heart, but not again!
That candy flavor’s gone and dried—
No more sugar-coated lies!

[Bridge – Spoken over band groove]
(Clara Jean):
Go ahead, baby, keep your charm!
I got me a love that don’t do harm!
(Darlene & Lottie):
Tell him, girl! Tell him!

(Clara Jean):
I need the truth, not that sweet talk jive—
Keep your sugar, I’ll stay alive!

[Breakdown – Drums and tambourine only]
(Call & Response)
Sugar-coated! (Lies!)
I’m wise to your disguise! (Oh yeah!)
You can talk that honey talk,
But I’m gone, I’m gonna walk!

[Final Chorus – Horns blasting, big finish]
Sugar-coated lies!
Can’t fool me twice!
You’re sweet on the outside, bitter within—
Baby, this time you won’t win!
Sugar-coated lies—
Oh, I’m sayin’ goodbye!

[Outro – Fade over rhythm & harmony]
(Ad libs)
“No more sugar, no more lies…”
“Sweet talk can’t hypnotize…”
“No more sugar-coated lies!”
