His dad got word to the hockey team While Tommy was in the hospital In July, his favorite player Turned up on a FaceTime call An invitation to see a game Whenever he was well enough It didn’t change the work ahead Just gave them something else to talk about By March he was there for warmups His family at his side A puck, a stick with three words A bracelet changing sides The one you kept, the one you kept Wasn’t the one you signed He went home with something to show You took something for the ride You hung it where your eyes would land On days that asked a lot of you The one you kept, the one you kept Had come from him, not you On television, they asked Tommy What he’d say if he got the chance “Just thank you” came so simply Then Barzal appeared on the screen He said he’d hung the bracelet From the dashboard in his car And looked at it on difficult days Remembering what Tommy had faced The one you kept, the one you kept Wasn’t the one you signed He went home with something to show You took something for the ride You hung it where your eyes would land On days that asked a lot of you The one you kept, the one you kept Had come from him, not you He wrote “You inspire me” On the stick he gave away The bracelet on his dashboard Gave those words a place to stay The one you kept, the one you kept Wasn’t the one you signed He went home with something to show You took something for the ride You hung it where your eyes would land On days that asked a lot of you The one you kept, the one you kept Had come from him, not you
