17. Lower Away | Moby-Dick Act III: The Price of the Chase

V6

[The Scene] With Ahab’s purpose now accepted by much of the crew, the voyage moves from declaration into the practical violence of whaling. A whale is sighted and the boats are lowered, placing Stubb in command of men whose safety depends upon quick judgement and disciplined action. Where Ahab approaches the hunt through obsession, Stubb treats danger as familiar work, directing the chase with confidence born from experience. The successful kill establishes the brutal routine that sustains the Pequod and begins to reveal the human and physical cost that will dominate the rest of the act. [Verse 1] There's vapour on the morning, clear and white, A rolling back breaks cleanly into sight. Men to the boats, now move and hold her fast, The moment's here, we've found our prey at last. [Verse 2] I know the weight of oar and pull of rope, I know the sudden fear that follows hope. Keep every hand where training says it goes, And trust the stroke the seasoned sailor knows. [Chorus] Lower away, now pull with all your might, Keep stroke together, keep the whale in sight. I've worked this danger often on the foam, Do what I tell you, lads, and bring it home. [Verse 3] The line runs hard, let every coil lie clear, A careless foot can buy a man his fear. Give room, hold fast, and mind the turning bow, We've trained for every heartbeat facing now. [Verse 4] The whale dives deep, the line goes singing down, I've seen such fury drag a boat around. Then up he comes, the sea breaks at his side, I set the boat and take the turning tide. [Chorus] Lower away, now pull with all your might, Keep stroke together, keep the whale in sight. I've worked this danger often on the foam, Do what I tell you, lads, and bring it home. [Verse 5] There's blood upon the water, work to do, No time for wonder when the iron's through. The danger passes only when it's done, Keep every movement steady, every one. [Verse 6] The creature weakens, broad beneath the spray, We hold our nerve and finish out the day. Success is not the boast a fool might make, It's knowing which command and chance to take. [Chorus] Lower away, now pull with all your might, Keep stroke together, keep the whale in sight. I've worked this danger often on the foam, Do what I tell you, lads, and bring it home. [Outro] We turn for ship, the daylight running low, Behind us spreads the widening crimson flow. I've met the risk and mastered what I can, Tomorrow brings more work to every man.
