[Verse 1] They moved production out of state. We read the notice at the gate. He brought a target for our pain And swore he'd make us whole again. [Chorus] They sold us someone to blame And told us we were strong. We stopped asking who got rich And asked who didn't belong. The men who sent our work away Were never asked to pay. [Verse 2] He blamed the men who'd come to stay For every job that went away. The man he meant had fixed my car. We'd split a pitcher at the bar. [Chorus] They sold us someone to blame And told us we were strong. We stopped asking who got rich And asked who didn't belong. The men who sent our work away Were never asked to pay. [Verse 3] They painted “Leave” across his wall. I couldn't find the words to call. He scrubbed until his knuckles bled. The plant stayed closed. The fear still spread. [Bridge] My husband didn't close that plant. He's short of work the same as you. You used to wave across the fence. What are you frightened he might do? [Final Chorus] They sold us someone to blame And told us we were strong. We stopped asking who got rich And asked who didn't belong. The men who sent our work away Were never asked to pay. [Outro] The plant stayed closed. (The fear still spread.) © 2026 The Shady River Bard. All rights reserved.
