RADIO STATION 11:11 S2E 7: “Kill the Signal”
[INTRO - INDUSTRIAL HUM, ELECTRICAL BUZZ, DISTANT HEARTBEAT] [Radio tuning] 11:08… 11:09… 11:10… [VOICE:] Pull the plug. [CLICK] [Silence] [One second] [Radio static explodes] [HEAVY INDUSTRIAL ROCK BEAT] [VERSE 1] I found the transmitter underneath the station Steel and wires running underneath the floor I found a switch with my name written on it And a warning painted across the door It said: “Whatever you do Don’t turn me off.” So I grabbed the cable I ripped it from the wall The lights went black The speakers stopped For three seconds… Nothing happened at all. [PRE-CHORUS] Then every radio in the city Started screaming at once Every television went to static Every clock struck eleven-one-one And a thousand voices Started saying my name [CHORUS] Kill the signal Pull the wire Burn the station Put out the fire Kill the signal Let it die If time is listening Then let it cry I don’t care what’s waiting On the other side I’m shutting down 11:11 tonight [POST-CHORUS] Kill it! Kill it! Kill the signal! [VERSE 2] I ran outside into the street But every car radio was playing me Different versions of the same conversation Different endings to the same memory One station said I was twenty One said I was seventy-three One said I died last Thursday One said I hadn’t been born yet Then my phone began to ring. [Phone ringing] I didn’t answer. It rang again. I didn’t answer. Then the child spoke through the voicemail: CHILD: You can’t destroy something… …by destroying where it lives. [PRE-CHORUS] I looked across the city And saw the windows light up Every apartment had a radio Every radio had us The woman appeared beside me But she looked afraid WOMAN: You have to stop. MALE: I’m trying. WOMAN: No. [Pause] WOMAN: You’re making it stronger. [CHORUS] Kill the signal Pull the wire Burn the station Put out the fire Kill the signal Let it die If time is listening Then let it cry I don’t care what’s waiting On the other side I’m shutting down 11:11 tonight [BRIDGE - INDUSTRIAL PULSE] [All sound suddenly cuts] MALE: Where’s the transmitter? WOMAN: Everywhere. MALE: What? WOMAN: The basement transmitter was only the first one. MALE: How many are there? WOMAN: As many as there are memories. [Static] MALE: That’s impossible. WOMAN: Stop saying that. [Deep bass pulse] WOMAN: Every time someone remembers 11:11… …another transmitter appears. [Beat] MALE: Then how do we stop it? WOMAN: We don’t. MALE: Then what? WOMAN: We change the message. [Music builds] [CHILD:] Too late. MALE: Why? CHILD: Someone already changed it. [Silence] MALE: Who? CHILD: You. [HEAVY DROP] [FINAL CHORUS] Kill the signal I tried to burn it down But every wire I severed Built another one somewhere else Kill the signal But the signal lives in me Every memory I remember Makes another frequency Kill the signal Now I finally know You can’t shut down tomorrow When tomorrow’s where you go [FINAL REFRAIN] 11:11! One station! A thousand skies! 11:11! One memory! A million lives! [INSTRUMENTAL CLIMAX] [Distorted guitar] [Industrial percussion] [Glitched voices] VOICE 1: Yesterday. VOICE 2: Tomorrow. VOICE 3: Remember. VOICE 4: Forget. VOICE 5: Remember. VOICE 6: Forget. [Everything cuts] [OUTRO - SINGLE RADIO TONE] MALE: What message did I change? [Static] CHILD: The first one. MALE: What did it say? [Pause] CHILD: “Come home.” [Silence] MALE: Who was it calling? [Long pause] CHILD: Your mother. [LOUD STATIC] [END]
