Your First Breath
Verse 1 The room was full of motion, Voices cutting through the air, Monitors and hurried footsteps, Hands reaching everywhere. Your mother held on through the pain, I held on to her hand, Trying not to show the fear I could barely understand. Then the room went strangely distant, Though the chaos carried on— One small cry broke through the panic, And every fear was gone. Pre-Chorus I tried to breathe. I tried to speak. But joy rose too fast And brought me to my knees. Chorus When you took your first breath, You took the breath from me. Joy broke open in my chest, Too deep for words to speak. I tried to hold myself together, But the tears came pouring through. You were born into this world— And I felt God’s love embrace me through you. ⸻ Verse 2 They lifted you beneath the lights, So fragile, warm, and new, Counting fingers, checking heartbeats, Doing all they had to do. Your mother called to ask if you Were breathing, safe, alive. I heard your voice answer for me, And something broke inside. Not from sorrow, not from suffering, Not from fear of what might be— It was more love than one heart Was ever meant to keep. Pre-Chorus The joy was more Than I could hold, So it poured from my eyes And flooded my soul. Chorus When you took your first breath, You took the breath from me. Joy broke open in my chest, Too deep for words to speak. I tried to hold myself together, But the tears came pouring through. You were born into this world— And I felt God’s love embrace me through you. ⸻ Verse 3 Then they laid you on her body, And the room became a church. No stained glass, no choir singing, Still I knew what heaven was. Your tiny hand curled around nothing, Your eyes opened to the light, And eternity looked back at me From a face I’d just met that night. I had searched for signs in silence, Looked for answers from above, But there beneath those hospital lights, I was surrounded by His love. ⸻ Bridge No thunder rolled. No angels came. No voice spoke out And called my name. Just blood and tears, A mother’s strength, A newborn cry, A life beginning. And suddenly I understood: God’s love is not always distant. Sometimes it comes trembling, Red-faced and crying, And is placed into your arms. I came to watch A baby being born— But when you opened your eyes, Something in me Was born too. ⸻ Final Chorus When you took your first breath, You took the breath from me. Unbearable joy filled every part Of everything I’d ever been. I couldn’t stop the tears from falling, I didn’t even want them to. You were born into this world— And I felt God’s love embrace me through you. In the chaos, in the crying, In your mother’s strength and pain, I saw heaven touch the earth— And I have never been the same. When you took your first breath, My eyes were opened too. You were born into this world— And I was born Into wonder Through you. Outro The room kept moving around us. The machines kept sounding on. But I held you, Weeping helplessly— And felt The arms of God.
