I worked at being lost A thousand ways to disappear No bags to pack, no notes to leave No message on the mirror Leaning into indifference I made jokes about despair Hiding in the street noise That welcomed me there Maybe I was bored I usually don't know You can’t really notice Till it’s time to go Might have been tired I just couldn’t tell But the mirror started smiling Wishing me well Believers flock to sacred places Then fill them up with tragic faces I’d rather toss a skipping stone Into a lake no map has ever known Than wait in someone else’s line Standing still, killing time Losing hope, swallowing pride Clutching a ticket by my side I listened to music That flooded the roof Watched painters in the alley Heard poets on the stoops The singers all lip synched The artists painted with one eye blind The magic of the poet’s search Vanished quickly from their lines I grew tired and bored Of people in the way It was easy to decide It was time to get away I caught a wind of glory A tornado where passion fell Twisting and spinning the mirror That kept wishing me well
