Just A Nobody
A mural on the wall outside precinct seven. 'twas painted two years ago, or maybe eleven, a guy with a guitar, silver arm raised, standing on top of a tower made of glass. Kids take selfies every Sunday, the paint is starting to chip on the left, But nobody's fixed it yet. That's how legends work in Night City. You don't have to be alive to be everywhere. Not the kind of legend they put on walls. Not a ghost inside the net, not a name that roars. Just a nobody with a gun and a job to do, just the night and you, and my head's spinning and spinning. First night out of the academy I was afraid, my sergeant pointed at the mural and said: "Forget everything you know about legends." Then handed me a standard-issue gun. No mods - "budget cuts, choom" he said, with his chromed hands as he walked away. I don't know what I am in this city, nor why... I only know what I'm not. Not the kind of legend they put on walls. Not a ghost inside the net, not a name that roars. Just a nobody with a gun and a job to do, just the night and you, and my head's spinning and spinning. Watson, three AM. A psycho with a blade near the river. Three corpses on the corner - normal people, The kind Night City doesn't put on murals. I called it in but nobody came fast... or at all. I'm just human skin and a gun and a badge with the worth of a burrito wrapper I keep thinking about what it means to show up, I'm not brave, but someone has to. And the legends? Maybe they thought the same... Then a flash and the blade is on your neck. Not the kind of legend they put on walls. Not a ghost inside the net, not a name that roars. Just a nobody with a gun and a job to do, just the night and you, and my head's spinning and spinning. The corner looked the same by morning. Same mural with the chipping paint. Night City doesn't care, it just keeps going. Before light faded I saw a civ running away... And my head's spinning and spinning. I showed up, maybe they're safe now, That's gotta count for something anyhow. Doesn't it? Doesn't it?
