Road Workers, We Owe You Respect

[Intro] On the road—listen. [Verse 1] Today I drove two hundred kilometers, rain coming down in heavy sheets, traffic packed tight, brake lights repeating, small delays turning minutes to weeks. Here and there, I’m held in place, engines breathing, nowhere to go, then I start seeing the changing shape of the road beneath the road we know. A lane gets added, a lane gets removed, a sign goes up, fresh paint gets laid, broken lines filled, shoulders improved— the whole network is constantly remade. We’re kept busy with it, rerouted, restricted, redirected, cones in a row and the work inspected, progress measured, pavement corrected. [Hook] So here’s a word for the hands in the rain, for the people who keep us moving again: we pass you by, but we owe you respect— road workers, thank you for the work you protect. [Verse 2] It’s dangerous work in the noise and fumes, standing close while the traffic flies, metal on metal, exhaust in the rooms, warning vests bright against gray skies. Motorists rarely wave as they pass, mostly they stare like you’re in the way, like a closed-off lane is a personal slight, like safety should happen without delay. But you hold the line while the drivers complain, measure the edge and rebuild the frame, through weather, pressure, impatient blame, you make tomorrow’s route safer than today’s same. That nuisance is somebody’s care, a detour is somebody staying alive, a painted line is a promise laid there so strangers can reach the other side. [Hook] So here’s a word for the hands in the rain, for the people who keep us moving again: we pass you by, but we owe you respect— road workers, thank you for the work you protect. [Outro] Next time I’m waiting in traffic, I’ll remember: those cones are not an interruption. They’re evidence someone showed up, so the road can keep carrying us forward. Road workers—thank you for being there.
