The Bombsight Swing

V5.5

„The Bombsight Swing” (Intro) Ladies and gentlemen, gather around, There's a tale of glory high above the ground. The Luftwaffe was waiting, the Flak guns too, But the boys in the bombers said, "We know what to do!" (Verse 1) Tim drew the map with a confident grin, "Destroy both targets, and we'll surely win!" Mosquitos were humming, Marauders in line, Spitfires sparkling in the bright sunshine. The Germans came roaring, determined and proud, Their engines were grumbling terribly loud. Fw One-Nine-Zeros and Messerschmitts too, But fate had a very different view. (Chorus) Swing, boys, swing, let the Merlin engines sing, Round and round the heavens go, What a lovely show! Bang, boys, bang, hear the machine guns clang, The bombs all miss, but no one cares, We'll get them by the stairs! (Verse 2) Michael flew forward in a neat little row, I whispered, "My friend, that's the way not to go." My best pilot grinned and tipped down his nose, And suddenly Germans were losing their clothes! Hans Dortemann spun like a leaf in the breeze, His Focke-Wulf tumbled with remarkable ease. A Messerschmitt followed, then one more took flight, Away from the battle, right into the night. (Chorus) Swing, boys, swing, let the Merlin engines sing, Spitfires dancing wing to wing, What a splendid thing! Bang, boys, bang, hear the rear gunners clang, The bombers shoot, the fighters run, My goodness, what fun! (Verse 3) Poor David was watching and learning no more, He stepped in the trap that we'd used once before. Alasdair smiled with a devilish wink, And David departed much sooner than he'd think. Meanwhile Andy was trying, and trying in vain, His dice were behaving quite strangely again. Not one little six did the fellow obtain, He might as well have thrown them from a train. (Bridge) Then came the great bombing, the moment of truth, The pilots all boasting of courage and youth. The Mosquitos dived, The Marauders flew, The bombs missed the targets— Not one, but a few! The Flak crews were laughing, The bombers turned red, The Spitfires arrived and shot everything dead. (Final Chorus) Swing, boys, swing, let the victory bells ring, The targets fell, the Germans fled, Exactly as Tim said. Sing, boys, sing, hear the happy engines sing, The bombs were bad, the guns were grand, The finest in the land! (Outro) So raise up a glass to the crews of that day, To Tim and to Bart who carried the day. The Marauders returned with a marvellous boast: "Our bombs missed the target... but our machine guns did most!"
