So contrary to what I said I wouldn't do last month, I started working in Japanese this month, and as expected, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. But for the sake of the joke I will continue! I'm currently doing fanworks for a really amazing writer, so all the details within the songs are related to stuff from their work. But anyway, let's talk about anison as a genre! Anison - which is a genre name I hadn't known about before looking it up on Suno - is anime songs, typically in the training data out there as the OP and ED (opening and ending songs). As such, the emotion involved tends to be upbeat, encouraging, and anthemic for OPs, while EDs tend to be slightly more lowkey due to their being played with the credits. They're typically J-pop or J-rock ballads (and thus follow typical ballad structure). However, what's in the weighting is the above, when modern anison (post 2010) is a MUCH more complex blend of genres. What that means is that prompting for anison gets very generic (and oldschool) sounding J-rock and J-pop, for the most part, where modern anison tends toward blending in R&B, rap, jazz, and more. So it can get very expensive pretty fast, as far as I've found, to do anything more than generic. Especially because for the most part I still WANT the core emotion in the J-rock and J-pop stuff. Note that if you don't prompt for j- something with anison (see this track), you don't really get something that would sound like, well, anison - ie japanese-production sounding; it basically becomes an emotional weighting more than anything else. However... sad, melancholy J-rock is also nearly impossible to do with the anison tag. .... Despite doing a lot of headbanging anison stuff, I don't think my general style or taste has changed, just that it's not very suited to the purpose of those tracks. I honestly generally have a distaste for rock or metal songs because my synaesthesia makes me feel when I'm listening to distortion like I'm being wrapped in steel wool. But anison....somehow gets through that. It's a little colorful. Which is good, because I have plans for a full OST. Oh yes, and this is probably the first time I've done so much with AI translation (into Japanese), so I genuinely have no idea how well it's translating. The lyrics and meaning are completely original still, of course, but if they sound clunky to native Japanese-speakers, I can only apologize. I personally think that one of the main differentials of the anison genre is the mix between japanese and english lines or words. There are of course anison that don't do it, but I think all the internationally popular ones do to some degree. So I of course will do it as well (usually in the chorus since that's the most singable part). also it's nice to be able to understand part of my song when listening to it. of course, this gives me the idea of mixing japanese and mandarin like that... and english... but that might be too many languages. we'll see! TL in japanese below:
