Oh-oh... Here comes the morning... Oh-oh... Then it fades away... Alarm goes off in a room painted black, Pull on my boots, throw the covers back. The northern sky hasn’t changed its face, Winter’s got the daylight running late. Headlights cut through the drifting white, Diamonds on the highway catching light. Mile after mile, I follow that line, Looking for the morning I can’t seem to find. I keep my heart beneath my coat, Hide the words that fill my throat. You ask me if I’m doing okay— I almost tell you... Then turn away... It’s a tiny strip of day, Shining through the grey, Just enough to pull me forward, Then it slips away. I smile, but it might crack, Say I’m fine and hold it back. Where does the mind go When the sun won’t stay? I keep chasing tomorrow Through yesterday— Living for that tiny, Tiny strip of day. Hey-hey... Don’t let it fade away... Hey-hey... That tiny strip of day... Cold air hits like a warning sign, But the banjo on the radio keeps me in time. That northern wind knows where I’ve been, Knocks on the glass, but I won’t let it in. Drive to work underneath the stars, Drive back home and there they are. Somewhere between those yellow lines, I forgot how living’s supposed to feel alive. I keep my dreams beneath my coat, Little sparks of stubborn hope. You ask me if I’m doing okay— This time I tell you... “I’m finding my way...” It’s a tiny strip of day, Shining through the grey, Just enough to pull me forward, Then it slips away. I smile, but it might crack, Still, I’m learning to fight back. Where does the mind go When the sun won’t stay? I keep chasing tomorrow Through yesterday— Living for that tiny, Tiny strip of day. If daylight’s only passing through, I’ll catch what I can and hold it true. I’m not becoming all this night— I’m still right here behind the headlights. There’s a fire underneath this cold, A little wild and a little old. And even when the darkness stays, I’ll keep reaching for the day. Oh-oh... I can feel it changing... Oh-oh... The morning’s waiting... For that tiny strip of day, Breaking through the grey, Just enough to wake my heart And carry me away. I smile, and maybe it cracks, But now I’m never turning back. I know where the mind goes When the sun won’t stay— It keeps chasing tomorrow, It keeps finding a way. Living for that tiny, Tiny strip of day. Just enough light To remember my name... Just enough hope To begin again... The night may come... But it can’t take away That tiny... Tiny strip of day...
