That Old Porch
'That Old Porch' That old porch across the tracks, Is where we drank our coffee black, And don't know about things we lack, Cause we had all we needed, A cotton pillow, a feather bed in that little shack.... We were taught many lessons From the scholars of the truth, In the stories of how they survived their youth.... That Old Porch (Chorus) That old front porch is where we were educated, loved, disciplined and appreciated.... I remember the silence like a tail wagging on an old hound, Which was eager to hear the stories too, From the old folks that would come around.... I guess our little shack was too close to the track, Sometimes the wind from the train would blow the candle out, And daddy would have to light it back.... (Chorus) That old porch That old porch would shake as it came by But we didn't mind, That 6 o'clock whistle was how we told time.... There were soft singing voices with blue eyes, Straight teeth and curvy thighs.... And where we fell in love on a promise to a shooting star, We'd always stay together And never wander too far.... From the porch we observed miracles that we hadn't seen, Birth, rainbows, blind birds in flight after night, Were just some of the things.... On the porch we had wash day With water from the well, Torn clothes and quilting would have to wait a spell.... On the porch we'd shell the beans and hull the peas, And can the rest, to fill our needs.... (Chorus) That Old Porch And take a day to bless, To feel normal like the rest.... On the porch was Grandpaw With his tobacco and pipe, And Grandmaw would take her Garrett Snuff dip after supper every night.... That old porch was where time stood still for me, I miss the smells, the tales and the lost ones I no longer see .... When I die, bury me across the tracks by the shack, So everytime you hear that whistle is another time I come back.
