[Intro — tape hiss, low drone, distant congregation] [Deep gravelly Southern baritone — spoken like a sermon] Brothers... Sisters... Come closer... Don't avert your eyes... You've already seen it... And once you've seen... You have been chosen... [Whispered congregation] Chosen... [Baritone] There is only... One way... To sleep again... [Detuned banjo enters] [Verse] Found an image... On the screen... Ugliest damn thing... I'd ever seen... Dog in the dark... Eyes burnin' white... Teeth too many... Smile too wide... Closed the window... Killed the light... Still saw that face... All through the night... Behind my eyelids... In every dream... Waitin' there... Just watchin' me... [Pre-Chorus — sermon] You may delete the image... [Congregation] It remains... You may break the screen... [Congregation] It remains... You may close your eyes... [Congregation] IT REMAINS... [Baritone — whispered] Unless... You share... The blessing... [Chorus — slow, restrained] Spread the word... Spread the word... Show another... What you've learned... Pass it on... Let it be heard... Smile for me... Spread the word... [Instrumental — bowed fiddle, sub-bass, distant barking] [Verse] Three nights gone... I heard him speak... Not through my ears... But underneath... Scratchin' words... Inside my head... Send the picture... Or join the dead... Every night... He wandered near... Every night... A little more clear... At the foot... Of my bed... That crooked grin... Those eyes of dread... [Pre-Chorus — call and response] What must you do? [Congregation] SPREAD THE WORD... What must they see? [Congregation] SPREAD THE WORD... What buys your sleep? [Congregation] SPREAD THE WORD... [Baritone] And what buys theirs...? [Silence] Nothing... [Chorus — heavier, obsessive] SPREAD THE WORD... SPREAD THE WORD... Show another... What you've learned... PASS IT ON... LET IT BE HEARD... Smile for me... SPREAD THE WORD... Spread the word... Spread the word... Spread the word... [Congregation gradually joining] Spread the word... Spread the word... Spread the word... [Instrumental — ritual drums begin] [Bridge — cult sermon, increasingly feverish] There is salvation... [Congregation] IN THE SENDING... There is mercy... [Congregation] IN THE SHARING... There is sleep... [Congregation] IN OBEDIENCE... [Baritone] One image... One soul... One click... And your burden... BECOMES... THEIRS... [Congregation erupts] SPREAD THE WORD!!! [Final Chorus — increasingly unhinged] SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SEND IT OUT! PASS IT ON! ANOTHER SCREEN! ANOTHER HOME! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! LET THEM SEE! LET THEM LEARN! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! [Music begins distorting] SPREAD IT! SPREAD IT! SPREAD IT! SPREAD IT! [Baritone screaming over congregation] YOU SAW THE SMILE!!! [Congregation] SPREAD THE WORD!!! [Baritone] YOU KNOW THE PRICE!!! [Congregation] SPREAD THE WORD!!! [Baritone] YOU WANT TO SLEEP?! [Congregation] SPREAD THE WORD!!! [Everything collapsing into distortion] SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE WORD! SPREAD THE— SPREAD THE— SPREAD THE— SPREAD— [Instant silence] [Computer notification] [Long pause] [Deep baritone — barely audible] Your turn... [Low canine growl] [Whispered congregation, impossibly distant] Spread... the word... [Hard cut]
