**THE WORLD KEPT GOING** **(Hook)** The world kept going when you left, and I still don't understand it. How the sun could hit the window like my whole life wasn't damaged. Everybody kept on living, I was barely holding steady, trying to accept you're gone when my heart wasn't ready. The world kept going when you left, that's the part that fucking haunts me. I was standing in the middle of a life that felt like nothing. People asked me how I'm doing, I just tell 'em I'm alright, then I go back to my room and fall apart when it's quiet. **(Verse 1)** I remember looking around like somebody should've noticed, Like the atmosphere should change, like the sky should've been broken. But the traffic kept moving and the television kept going, while I'm trying to comprehend how a heartbeat can be stolen. I couldn't understand it, couldn't organize the panic, every thought became fragmented, every answer sounded backwards. They were telling me to breathe, but I forgot how to do that, 'cause the person I was breathing for was somebody I couldn't bring back. And that's when grief got real. Not the sympathy. Not the flowers. Not the "I'm sorry for your loss." The loss. The fucking loss. The realization that no matter how badly I wanted you here, wanting wasn't gonna change it. That's the part that broke me. Knowing love can be infinite and still not be enough to keep somebody alive. **(Hook)** The world kept going when you left, and I still don't understand it. **(Verse 2)** I started noticing your absence in the smallest fucking places. A joke I'd normally tell you. A song you'd probably hate. Something stupid that happened that would've made you laugh. Those are the moments that destroy me. Not the big ones. The ordinary ones. Because grief doesn't always knock the door down. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it's your name appearing in my thoughts for absolutely no reason. Sometimes it's reaching for my phone before I remember. Sometimes it's driving down a road and thinking, "I wonder what he's doing." Then remembering. Nothing. You're not doing anything. You're gone. And I hate that sentence more every time I say it. I got memories stacked inside me that I can't put anywhere, so I turn them into melodies and leave them in the air. Every syllable gets heavier the deeper that I stare, 'cause I'm writing from a place where I still wish you were here. And maybe that's the reason I don't want the pain to disappear. Because pain is all I have left that still feels connected to you. **(Bridge)** I don't want to forget. Even if remembering hurts. Even if some nights I can't make it through the song. I'd rather hurt than feel nothing. Because feeling nothing would scare me more. **(Verse 3)** Sometimes I get angry at the people who can still call their brothers. They don't understand the privilege of annoying one another. They can fight and say they're sorry, they can leave and still come back, while I'd give anything I had to have one ordinary argument. That's what I mean when I say I miss you. I don't need some perfect memory. I don't need some cinematic moment. I miss the normal shit. The conversations nobody else remembers. The stupid shit that meant nothing until it became everything. And I hate that I'm learning how important those moments were after they're already over. I keep trying to build a future with a piece of it missing. Keep accomplishing things that I wish you could've witnessed. Keep pretending I'm okay while the truth sits underneath it: I don't want to just remember you. I wanted more time with you. That's it. More time. Nothing complicated. Just more. **(Final Hook)** The world kept going when you left, and I still don't understand it. How the sun could hit the window like my whole life wasn't damaged. Everybody kept on living, I was barely holding steady, trying to accept you're gone when my heart wasn't ready. The world kept going when you left, but I carry you regardless. Every memory, every lesson, every scar that you left on me. And if somebody says your name, I won't ever let it fade, 'cause you weren't just somebody who died. You were my brother. You were my family. You were a part of my life that I don't get to replace. And maybe that's what grief is. Learning how to keep living while carrying somebody you never wanted to lose. So yeah... the world kept going. I just wish... for one fucking day... it would've stopped with me.
