Shut Up And Calculate Blues ©2026 by ContempoJedi [Intro] Good afternoon. Today we will discuss the measurement problem in quantum mechanics. According to the Copenhagen interpretation a quantum system exists in many possible states until it is measured. Why? Excellent question. The traditional answer is: "Shut up… and calculate." [Verse 1] Phil Dick said Reality’s the thing that stays in place When belief finally collapses And you exit cosmic space But down in the subatomic Things are stranger than they appear A world of waving functions Doing exactly what we feared If I see a spinning electron And you swear it’s standing still Is that an objective fact Or just a triumph of the will? Chris Fuchs says the wave function Is personal instead Which is great for customer service If it's all inside my head [Chorus] Oh it's the Shut Up and Calculate blues today Particles keep dancing while observers look away Is it wave or information in a cosmic computation Or a wrinkle in the math of the cosmic situation If reality’s opinion dressed up in scientific zeal Just a quantum hallucination with a polished feel [Verse 2] Now comes Quantum Darwinism, Survival of the best Information making copies Just to pass the measurement test Breeding in the environment Multiplying fast The data copied most Is the one that lasts So if we keep on measuring Till we finally all agree We can pretend We're living in shared objectivity But don’t ask where the environment begins Or where it's gone We quietly put it in by hand Before the break of dawn [spoken professor] For those keeping score, This is the point where the Many Worlds people Start smiling. [Bridge, music drops softer] The detector’s made of atoms And the atoms are a blur So is the cat actually dead Or does it still prefer to purr [spoken professor footnote] Footnote. For those of you asking where the wave function actually collapses… Please see Appendix B. Appendix B says: "We don't know." [Bridge continues] My brain begins to sizzle, in a loop of contradiction. Are these scientific facts, or just fiction? We’ve postulated the problem, quietly out of the room In a cloud of probability, and Hilbert-space gloom. [Final Chorus, stop-time accents] Oh it's the Shut Up and Calculate blues tonight (CALCULATE!) Particles keep dancing while observers miss the sight (CALCULATE!) Is it wave or information in a cosmic computation (CALCULATE!) Or a wrinkle in the math of the quantum situation (CALCULATE!) If reality’s the copy That gets observed the most Then cat videos might be The truest thing in the cosmos [Outro] If the most repeated data is the only thing that's real Then the universe runs on retweets and mass appeal [spoken professor] After seventy years of research the physics community has reached a consensus. We will continue arguing indefinitely.
