[Verse 1] You found me in the gutter sludge where even dogs walked by You called me by a proper name before I had the right I still knew every heavy lock, I still knew every lie But I would rather earn your nod than take the easy prize [instrument break] [Chorus] And I learned to bear a shield To stand instead of run Through every bruise and every break You made me into someone We’ll walk straight into hell If that’s where you will lead Your faith alone has made me a man And I will be your shield (I will be your shield) [Verse 2] You are the hero of this tale, all battered, bruised, and scarred My Captain... oh, my Captain... I’ll follow where you charge We came to break the angel free and draw the ancient blade But the mountain split beneath our feet and woke the world in flame [instrument break] [Chorus] And I learned to bear a shield To stand instead of run Through every bruise and every break You made me into someone We’ll walk straight into hell If that’s where you will lead Your faith alone has made me a man And I will be your shield [Bridge] Across the chasm, the world-end wyrm awoke The sky was torn with ash and teeth, the final mountain broke I caught the falling fury, I heard the armor crack You reached your bleeding hand for mine... I'll save you this time.. Don't look back. [theremin break] [Outro] I’ll be your shield... just one last time. Go save the angel, what I have to give is mine the life you gave to me I will not turn, I will not flee I will be your shield one last time [outro]
