Och, listen up, ye daft lot! Gather roond yer pints or yer phones an’ let me spin ye this fresh-telled yarn straight fae the Kingdom o’ Fife in 2026. Nae dusty auld fairy tale – this is the Witch o’ Fife updated for the TikTok age, full o’ WhatsApp covens, smart-home alarms, an’ one nosey auld git who learned the hard way: never poke yer beak intae yer missus’s business! In a wee semi-detached hoose just ootside Kirkcaldy – double-glazin’, Sky dish, the lot – lived auld Tam an’ his wife, wee Betty. Tam was a quiet yin, aye scrollin’ Facebook an’ moanin’ aboot diesel prices. But Betty? She was flighty as a hen on Red Bull. Every other night she’d vanish intae the gloamin’, phone on Do Not Disturb, no’ back till the milk lorry rumbled by. Neighbours whispered behind their curtains: “That Betty’s a proper witch!” One evenin’ Tam corners her in the kitchen, kettle whistlin’. “Betty, lass, whit are ye up tae? Are ye on Tinder, or is it true – ye’re a witch?” Betty laughs, eyes twinklin’. “Aye, Tam, ye daft bugger! Me an’ the lassies meet at the auld kirk on the moor. We turn green bay-tree branches intae flyin’ e-scooters, hunt foxes an’ weasels, even sail cockle-shell boats ower the Forth tae Norway for a carry-on wi’ the Norse lot!” Tam’s jaw drops. Next new moon she’s aff again. When she returns smellin’ o’ fancy perfume an’ mischief, she spills the beans: “We stood on the pan hook ower the fire, said the magic words fae the Elves o’ Lapland, an’ WHOOSH! Up the lum like vape smoke. Landed in the Bishop o’ Carlisle’s wine cellar – that posh telly chef wi’ the massive vault an’ cameras. Doors flew open, alarms never beeped, an’ we drank the good stuff till we sang like angels. Back in Fife by dawn!” Tam begs, “Teach me the spell!” Betty refuses: “Nae chance, hen. Ye’d make a mess.” That night she’s gone. Tam creeps doon, hides behind the sofa, an’ hears the coven – four wee wifies clinkin’ mugs o’ mulled wine. They climb the pan hook, whisper the words, an’ vanish up the chimney in sparkly puffs. Tam repeats the spell, heart hammerin’. Next thing – he’s whizzin’ through the air, coat tails flappin’, an’ lands SPLAT in the Bishop’s fancy cellar. Oak barrels, crystal glasses, bottles worth mair than his pension. “When in Rome…” Tam starts tastin’. One bottle… two… three… the good stuff. Soon he’s singin’ “Auld Lang Syne” tae a barrel o’ claret an’ passin’ oot cold. The witches finish their party, notice Tam’s missin’, an’ leg it back tae Fife laughin’. “That’ll teach the nosey goat!” says Betty. Next mornin’ the Bishop’s staff find Tam snorin’ among empty bottles. Alarms blarin’, police called. The Bishop – big red-faced man in velvet – roars, “Witchcraft! Burglary! Court an’ the maximum!” Headlines scream: “Drunk Pensioner in Billionaire Wine Heist!” Tam’s in the dock, handcuffs on, thinkin’ his last hour’s come. Judge bangin’ the gavel, Bishop demandin’ blood. Suddenly – flutter flutter – a wee bird lands on his shoulder, wearin’ a tiny red nightcap. In Betty’s voice it whispers the magic word. Tam shouts it loud: handcuffs clatter aff, he rises like a helium balloon, an’ flies oot the courtroom window wi’ the bird ridin’ shotgun! Back in Fife he lands in his back garden, legs shakin’. Betty’s waitin’ wi’ a cuppa an’ a grin. “Weel, Tam? Learned yer lesson?” Tam nods hard. “Aye, lass. Never checkin’ yer location on Find My Phone again. Never meddlin’ in yer witchy affairs. Ye dae whit ye like – I’ll just watch the fitba’.” An’ fae that day, the auld man an’ his witch wife lived happy as Larry. Neighbours still whisper, but noo wi’ a wink an’ a smile. Because every Scotsman kens the truth: behind every daft auld git there’s a witchy wife wi’ a red nightcap an’ a spell that’ll save yer skin – or send ye flyin’! There ye go, folks – the Witch o’ Fife’s Red-Nightcap Rescue. Dinnae spy on yer missus, or ye might end up in a wine cellar wi’ a hangover an’ a courtroom drama. Slàinte! Mind yer ain business!
