TIME 013 – The Wells of the Underworld | The Time Machine
(Verse 1) The Traveller crossed the meadows where enormous circles lay, Like mouths of buried kingdoms opening beneath the day. He leaned above one shaft and felt the cooler air arise, While darkness dropped below him beyond reach of human eyes. (Verse 2) Then from the depths there sounded a mechanical refrain, A pulse of hidden engines like the beating of a chain. It climbed through stone and silence with a rhythm deep and slow, The labour of some buried world still turning far below. (Chorus) The wells of the underworld breathed beneath the open ground, And ancient unseen engines kept returning sound for sound. Though all his age had vanished and its monuments were dust, Some hidden wheels beneath the earth still moved because they must. (Verse 3) He wondered what vast purpose kept the mechanisms alive, What hands maintained the systems that continued still to drive. No Eloi seemed to question what was working underground, Or why the sleeping countryside concealed that endless sound. (Verse 4) The shafts stood like great chimneys sunk inverted through the land, A network far beneath him shaped by some forgotten hand. The future now seemed divided between sunlight and the deep, Where one world laughed above while hidden engines would not sleep. (Chorus) The wells of the underworld breathed beneath the open ground, And ancient unseen engines kept returning sound for sound. Though all his age had vanished and its monuments were dust, Some hidden wheels beneath the earth still moved because they must. (Bridge) The Traveller heard history in every measured beat, A civilisation buried underneath his very feet. The surface spoke of leisure, but the depths betrayed the lie, For something still was labouring where daylight could not pry. (Outro) He left the shaft behind him as the evening shadows fell, But still beneath the meadow came the beating from the well. And every pulse reminded him the future had two skies, One open to the sunlight, one concealed from human eyes.
