Shock Wave

She didn’t rush in. Didn’t make a scene. Just arrived like something heavy finally reaching the ground. The bass was already working on me. She finished the job. She came in late Not dramatic, just late enough That the room forgot what minute it was. Lights stuttered overhead. I lost my drink somewhere near her shoulder and didn’t miss it. Hair pinned wrong. Neck damp where the heat gathers. She smelled like rain hitting metal, like something burned and didn’t apologize. I stopped checking the exits. She didn’t scan the room. Didn’t need to. The air adjusted first. It didn’t sound loud It moved me That’s the part I didn’t see coming You don’t hear a shock wave You check what still stands I went quiet I went quiet Her voice stayed low Not kind, not cruel. Certain, like she’d already run this play on somebody smarter. I felt rehearsed. She talked about the river like it keeps score. Said the city leaks at night and some people drink it straight. Said she sleeps better when the drums don’t stop. I nodded too much. My ribs were answering things I didn’t say out loud. Her hand brushed my arm Not a touch, more a claim. I felt it climb my spine and stop just short of permission. I didn’t break I shifted Like something slid out of place You don’t hear a shock wave You feel the delay When nothing lines up The same way She laughed once Short, sharp. Like she caught herself enjoying the damage. Said, “You look like a man who still thinks he’s steering.” I didn’t argue. Didn’t trust my mouth. Outside, sirens braided with music. Beer, rain, something sour in the air. She leaned in and said, “Nothing clean survives this place.” I believed her faster than I should have. I don’t know where she sleeps. Don’t know if she does. I know she left fingerprints inside my head. I know the floor kept humming after she walked out like it missed her weight. Some things don’t explode They pass through you And leave you standing wrong That’s a shock wave When the room feels fine But you don’t belong She was gone before closing time. No goodbye. Just a bent straw on the bar and my hands shaking for no clear reason. I walked home slow, like the ground might still be settling. Still feels like it is.
