I still remember the hope in the room Two little heartbeats beneath the moon We spoke of tomorrow, we pictured their eyes Then sorrow came walking in, dressed as goodbye I searched every corner of heaven and earth Wondering what sin could have measured their worth Was I not faithful? Was I not enough Did I do something wrong to deserve this kind of love Why did You take them, Lord? Why did they go Why leave two empty places no one else could know Was there something I did, was there something I failed Or were they too precious for this broken world’s trail Where are they now, Lord? Are they safe in Your care Do they know that I love them? Do they know I was there I’m carrying questions no answer can mend Will I hold them again when this life reaches its end The house kept breathing, but something wasn’t right A mother’s heart breaking, a father’s broken might I learned how to smile while the ache stayed concealed Learned how to answer when people asked if I’ve healed But healing ain’t forgetting, and silence ain’t peace Sometimes grief only sleeps till the memories speak Then the years disappear, and the tears start to fall And I’m back in that darkness, still asking it all Why did You take them, Lord? Why did they go Why leave two empty places no one else could know Was there something I did, was there something I failed Or were they too precious for this broken world’s trail Where are they now, Lord? Are they safe in Your care Do they know that I love them? Do they know I was there I’m carrying questions no answer can mend Will I hold them again when this life reaches its end If heaven has a meadow where the lost children play Let my twins know I love them every minute, every day If they’re waiting by a river underneath a brighter sky Tell them their father still calls them when he cries And if I’m asking questions You don’t choose to explain Then sit here beside me in the middle of this pain Don’t give me easy words or a reason dressed in gold Just hold what’s left of me when I can’t carry this load I don’t believe their lives were wasted or small Even though I never heard their voices at all They changed me forever before they could stay Left fingerprints on my soul that the years can’t erase I still don’t know why You allowed them to leave And some nights faith feels too heavy to breathe But love is still love though the cradle stayed bare And I trust that my children are held somewhere Why did You take them, Lord? Why did they go These are questions that follow wherever I go Was I not good enough? Was my love not enough Or was this just the darkness that no heart can explain or discuss Where are they now, Lord? Are they shining and free Will they know who I am when they finally see I’ll carry their memory till my last goodbye Still loving, still waiting, still asking You why Two little lights beyond the edge of my sight Two little names in the middle of the night I can’t prove what heaven holds beyond this life But I pray they are safe, untouched by strife So if You can hear me through this broken cry I’m not asking for answers tonight I’m asking You to keep them until I arrive And tell them their father loved them all his life
