My God, my God, why have You left me? Why do Your words seem far away? I cry by day—You do not answer, I groan by night—no rest, no stay. Yet You are holy, enthroned in praise, Our fathers trusted and were saved. They called to You, and You delivered, Yet now I ache, alone, dismayed. Men mock and scorn, they shake their heads— “He trusted God—let Him defend! If He delights, let rescue come!” Yet here I break, with no relief. Like water poured, my bones run dry, My heart melts soft as burning wax. My tongue sticks fast to aching jaws, They pierce my hands, they stretch my back. But You, O Lord—do not be distant! O Strength of mine, come quick to aid! Snatch me from teeth of snarling beasts, From horns of bulls, their fury stayed. Then I will tell my brothers of You, Amidst the crowd, I’ll sing Your name. Praise Him, all you who fear the Lord! For He has heard my cry of pain. The poor will eat and be fulfilled, Those seeking Him will praise His worth. The ends of earth will turn in worship, All kings will bow before His birth. For dominion belongs to God alone, He rules the nations from above. The dying live to tell His story— This is the Lord—His name is Love.
