[Verse 1] I heard him first by the creek One hoof, then the rest Moon on the fence line Cold at the back of my neck His coat dragged the mud Like a shadow with hands He came through the cornfield Past the dead winter grass [Pre-Chorus] Don’t turn around Don’t make a sound That old black horse Is circling now His hand in the dark His blade in the air He’s looking for names And mine’s right there [Chorus] Headless horseman Ride, ride, ride Headless horseman Right outside He’s got my fear On a black thread tight Headless horseman Ride, ride, ride (ride, ride, ride) (ride, ride, ride) [Verse 2] I bolted the door He hit it once The whole frame shivered Like teeth in my gums Lantern on the porch Went sickly green I saw that horse At the end of my dreams No face to read No mercy to find Just that empty collar And the hunger inside [Pre-Chorus] Don’t turn around Don’t make a sound That old black horse Is circling now His hand in the dark His blade in the air He’s looking for names And mine’s right there [Chorus] Headless horseman Ride, ride, ride Headless horseman Right outside He’s got my fear On a black thread tight Headless horseman Ride, ride, ride (ride, ride, ride) (ride, ride, ride) [Bridge] By the old grave road I saw the smoke A lonely lantern And a snapped white rope He took my breath Then left me mine Now every hard wind Sounds like hooves behind [Final Chorus] Headless horseman Ride, ride, ride Headless horseman Right outside He’s got my fear On a black thread tight Headless horseman Ride, ride, ride Headless horseman Ride, ride, ride Headless horseman Till the daylight dies (ride, ride, ride) (ride, ride, ride)
