Part I — The photograph
You are the problem— Not the person. The distance between the person and the version of the person that can be explained. Please remain calm. For those who can't sleep, the moon has been replaced by a photograph of the moon. The photograph has been retouched. The retouching has been retouched. Somewhere in the darkroom, a technician is removing the last visible evidence that the moon was ever there. My cat wants to show you her crossed eyes. She has been watching the moon through the window. She says the photograph is looking back. She says one eye sees the world and the other sees what the world has done to it. I tell her this is impossible. She looks at me with the expression of a witness who has been asked to identify the body.
