A life expressed in music and verse I took a class on songwriting, once The teacher said we need to write what we know The best songs he claimed are based on A life of pain and loss Lyrics and music that cry out Expressing a darkness of the soul needing release A life expressed in music and verse The thing is my life isn’t tragic or sad I have stories that are funny or ironic, but Nothing like having a dog that won’t hunt A broke-down Chevy truck Stolen by a no-good gal toting a bottle of whiskey and a gun If I’m to be honest, I’ll have to write about The happiness and joy I’ve had And all that’s happened in between The even flow of a life with few regrets But who can say what’s just around the corner Perhaps a song lurking in the dark, about A life expressed in music and verse A life expressed in music and verse
