It isn’t gold rings Or pretty, shiny things That I miss the most. Not the lost house keys That opened the doors to home sweet home, Or the cars I wrecked— They just came and went. It’s what lived around those things, The people, the places, the years, The pieces of life You can’t buy back Once they disappear. It’s the people I loved, Who were gone too soon. I never got the chance To say goodbye. But when I close my eyes I can see them waving, Looking down to make sure I’m behaving— And somehow getting by. Somehow my memories Have become my future, They’re the only place I still find a little joy. People tell me I shouldn’t live in the past, But what else could I do When people walked away And friendships didn’t last? So sometimes I go back To the chapters on those shelves, To the people who once knew me When I still knew myself. The pages from the past Have brought me here today, And the good old days remind me There can still be better days. Nothing lasts forever, Not the hurt, not even the rage, Not the years I spent so angry Wanting somehow to even the score. Maybe time doesn’t erase it, Maybe that’s not what it’s for. Maybe it teaches us to carry What we couldn’t carry before. But a touch, a hug, A sweet kiss on the lips— Those are the things I miss On the long, hard days. Someone to remind me I’m worthy, I’m needed, Someone close enough to tell me I’m still loved. Although I’m running solo, I never walk alone. I walk with Jesus, And He always leads me home, And I’m not alone.
