Everything in the world is just a giant Lego set, From the air that you breathe to the screen where we met. It’s the science of the "stuff" and the way it reacts, The bonds and the bubbles and the cold, hard facts. Don’t let the Periodic Table make your head spin, It’s just a map of the elements where we begin. You’ve got the metals on the left, the gases on the right, All made of tiny atoms, tucked out of sight. In the center of the atom is the Nucleus zone, Where the Protons and the Neutrons have built a little throne. The Protons are the positive, the "Identity" of the thing, The Neutrons are the neutral ones, just hanging in the ring. But on the outer edges, where the real drama starts, Are the Electrons spinning round, breaking little hearts. They’re the negative charge, and they’re looking for a mate, Trying to find a full shell to reach a steady state. If an atom steals a partner, or gives one away, That’s an Ionic Bond—and they’re linked from that day. One becomes positive, the other becomes "neg," Like a magnet pulling tight, no need to even beg. But if they share the load, if they hold hands instead, That’s a Covalent Bond—the kind that’s widely spread. Sharing is caring in the molecular world, That’s how water is made and the DNA’s curled. Now, sometimes things get heated and the atoms rearrange, A Chemical Reaction brings a permanent change. The "Reactants" go in and the "Products" come out, And you’ve got to balance the equation, without any doubt. Conservation of Mass—it’s the law of the land, You can't just lose an atom in the palm of your hand. What starts on the left must end on the right, Even if it turns to gas or a flash of bright light. Let's talk about the pH, the scale of the "burn," From the acids to the alkalis, it’s a lesson you’ll learn. Zero to six is the Acidic side of life, Like the lemon in your tea or the vinegar’s knife. Eight to fourteen is the Alkaline, the base, Like the soap in your shower or the bleach in the place. And right in the middle, at a perfect number seven, Is pure, neutral water—the chemical heaven. Then there’s the Rate of Reaction—how fast does it go? Do the particles move fast or are they moving too slow? Increase the temperature, give 'em some heat, And they’ll crash into each other on every single street. Or use a Catalyst—the "speed-dater" of the lab, Making the reaction happen in a quick little grab. Chemistry is everywhere, it’s the paint and the fuel, It’s the magic of the universe, and it’s pretty cool.
