The One That Matters

[Verse 1] We drew a map of heaven On the underside of fear Turned every doubt to data Till the data disappeared We taught our hands equations So they’d never have to feel Built mirrors into mirrors ’Til we lost what they reveal [Chorus] We keep reaching for the stars with a shaking hand Build a ladder out of rules we don’t understand Every signal that we send just becomes a plan And the one that matters Never makes it through the scanner We’re deafened by the patterns To the one that matters [Verse 2] We solved our sleepless questions With a brighter kind of screen Traced every pulse and fracture Named the spaces in between We crowned our cold reflection Called that kingdom “finally free” Now every face is framed And the frame is all we see [Chorus] We keep reaching for the stars with a shaking hand Build a ladder out of rules we don’t understand Every signal that we send just becomes a plan And the one that matters Never makes it through the scanner We’re deafened by the patterns To the one that matters [Bridge] Is there a word That doesn’t draw a border A look that isn’t learned From someone else’s order If the first light still burns Past the grid and the grammar Could we drop every answer Just to feel that hammer [Chorus] We keep reaching for the stars with a shaking hand Build a ladder out of rules we don’t understand Every signal that we send just becomes a plan And the one that matters Never makes it through the scanner We’re deafened by the patterns To the one that matters (oh) The one that matters
