1. Building Across The Street

The building across the street keeps its windows like confession booths fourth floor blue light someone scrolling through the wreckage of the news Second floor kitchen a woman laughs with nobody there or maybe someone just below the frame is learning how to care I stand inside my own dark room with the kettle going cold making saints of silhouettes so I don't have to hold my own Everybody has a weather they don't mention when they speak every room becomes a planet when you're watching from across the street And I know nothing but I feel everything through the glass and the distance and the city breathing thin I give strangers better endings than the one I gave to me in the building across the street in the building across the street There’s a boy on the fire escape smoking like he’s older than his bones phone lit up against his face waiting for a name to take him home Top floor couple dancing badly, beautifully, off-beat she steps on his shadow he kisses both her feet And I almost hate them for it then I bless them with my eyes some nights love looks impossible some nights it looks like light Everybody has a silence that they decorate as peace every heart becomes a window when you're watching from across the street And I know nothing but I feel everything through the glass and the distance and the city breathing thin I give strangers better endings than the one I gave to me in the building across the street in the building across the street Maybe someone over there has made a ghost of me as well the woman with the violin who lives inside a shell Maybe they have named my sorrow maybe they have guessed my scars maybe I am someone's window maybe I am someone's dark And I know nothing but I feel everything through the glass and the distance and the city breathing thin I give strangers better endings while mine waits underneath in the building across the street in the building across the street The lights go out one by one but I leave mine on not for anyone coming back just to prove I’m not gone
