The Shine

V5.5

Snow seals the Timberline mountain road; the Overlook listens. Jack brings his emptying papers, his thirst for a shape that won’t hold. Wendy feels the house under the house. Danny sees what the grown-ups cannot name. The boiler coughs hot. The typewriter clicks. Danny sees what the grown-ups call nothing. “Come and play with us,” the corridor keeps saying. A room in the mind where the lock is already turning. Already turning. All that the hotel wants is the shine! “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” — line after line, the mind goes thin! All that the hotel wants is the shine! “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” — filling the typewriter, filling the boy! The door won’t open! Won’t let him go! Room 217: the tub, the terror, the old wet breath. The ballroom glows with its false, polite warmth. The topiary waits in winter light. “Redrum” turns in the mirror, and the page turns back. Danny in the hall, holding his breath, trying to shine! Wendy with the bat! Jack at the edge of himself: “You’ve always been the caretaker!” “Here’s Johnny!” But the mountain keeps its face. The mountain keeps its grip. All that the hotel wants is the shine! “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” — line after line, the mind goes thin! All that the hotel wants is the shine! “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” — and the door won’t open, won’t let him go! The door splinters! The silence stays behind! The silence stays. Behind. Just the typewriter. Filling the boy. You've always been... The caretaker.
