[Verse 1] I see the reaper By the cattle gate His coat is empty But he knows my name Mud on his boots now Rain in his hands He points a finger I understand A cracked black lantern Swinging in the haze It throws my shadow All the wrong way [Pre-Chorus] He says, come closer I can’t turn back My knees are water My throat goes black [Chorus] I see the reaper I see him now (see him now) I see the reaper Right at my door I see the reaper I see him now (see him now) He’s got my midnight And he wants more [Verse 2] Mum left the kettle Soft on the hob Dad at the window With the radio off Your name in the hallway Cut like a knife I heard it breathing Under the floorboards tonight Pale little sparrows Crowd on the wire They lean and tremble Like they know the fire [Pre-Chorus] He says, come closer I can’t turn back My knees are water My throat goes black [Chorus] I see the reaper I see him now (see him now) I see the reaper Right at my door I see the reaper I see him now (see him now) He’s got my midnight And he wants more [Bridge] And if I kneel Will the dark grow kind? If I close my eyes Will he leave behind This skin, this sorrow This crooked prayer? He only laughs He’s already there [Final Chorus] I see the reaper I see him now (see him now) I see the reaper Right at my door I see the reaper I see him now (see him now) He’s got my midnight And he wants more I see the reaper I see him now (see him now) He’s got my midnight Forevermore
