The Last Lighthouse

[Verse 1] The sun hasn't risen in seven days The lighthouse went dark in the rain Old keeper's gone, left his coat behind And nobody knows where he went that night Four of us climbed those wooden stairs With a rusted key and a broken prayer His room smelled like salt and smoke And a letter was waiting beside the old rope [Pre-Chorus] She said, "Don't follow the light" She said, "Don't call my name" But we heard a woman crying And the ocean answered back again [Chorus] She was the girl on the black horizon Four wings underneath the moon Black tears falling from her eyes And a crown that came too soon She said, "I was running from the world" "I only wanted somewhere to hide" Then the Black Horizon found me And she made me one of hers that night [Verse 2] We found her picture in the keeper's room A girl with a smile and a red dress He wrote her name on every page Like loving her could make her less afraid She ran away when she was young Angry at the world and everyone She found the sea and walked into the dark And met a goddess older than the stars [Pre-Chorus] The goddess asked her softly "Do you wish to leave it all?" She said, "I don't want to die" "I just don't want to belong" [Chorus] She was the girl on the black horizon Four wings underneath the moon Black tears falling from her eyes And a crown that came too soon She said, "I was running from the world" "I only wanted somewhere to hide" Then the Black Horizon found me And she made me one of hers that night [Verse 3] She said the goddess touched her face And the stars went out above the waves Her legs dissolved into the sea And something ancient grew inside her dreams Four wings opened from her back A crown grew where her heartbeat cracked She tried to scream, she tried to cry But all that fell were tears of black [Bridge] "I didn't want to disappear" "I only wanted someone near" "Then he came and lit the flame" "And every night he called my name" "He never feared what I had become" "He sat with me beneath the sun" "And when I told him I could never stay" "He said he'd follow me anyway" [Breakdown] The keeper crossed the blackened sea He went where no man should ever be He asked the Mother for her blessing And she smiled like she already knew "Would you leave your world for her?" "Would you give your life away?" He answered, "I'd give everything." And the Black Horizon opened its gates. [Final Chorus] She was the girl on the black horizon Four wings against the dying sky Black tears falling on his face As he told the world goodbye She said, "You didn't have to follow" He said, "I promised you I'd stay" Then the sea rose underneath them And carried both their names away [Outro] The lighthouse still stands empty But the island never sees the day And sometimes four wings cross the water When the black horizon wakes We asked her if we could bring him home She only looked into the sea "He is home." And the lighthouse went dark.
