Columnae Ignis (Pillars of Fire)
[Intro – Solemn monk chant, low hurdy-gurdy drone] Nazir Dei ab utero matris suae (Judges 13:5 – “A Nazirite to God from his mother’s womb”) [Verse 1 – Slow, epic march] Born beneath the promise, hair untouched by blade, Spirit of the Lord rushed on the lion in the glade. With naked hands he tore it open, jaws like temple gates, Honey from the carcass – sweet and deadly fate. (Judges 14) [Verse 2 – Galloping riffs, soaring vocals] Thirty men of Ashkelon fell to the jawbone’s arc, Heaps upon heaps in the valley of Lehi’s dark. “One thousand Philistines by the weapon of an ass!” He laughed in the sunlight, drunk on heaven’s wrath. (Judges 15) [Chorus – Huge, triumphant] Samson! Samson! Strength like the sun! Samson! Samson! By God’s own hand he won! Yet pride rose higher than the pillars he would break, Till sin cut deeper than any razor’s blade. [Verse 3 – Somber, minor-key lute + recorder] In the lap of Delilah the Nazirite slept, Silver and betrayal, the promise he never kept. Eyes burned out in Gaza, chained in the prison wheel, The mighty one broken, grinding like a beast of the field. (Judges 16) [Bridge – Choir whispers, then swells] Domine, memento mei… Recordare mei, et conforta me… (Judges 16:28 – “O Lord God, remember me… strengthen me only this once”) [Breakdown – Crushing, half-time growls] Hair grew again in the darkness of disgrace, One final prayer from a blind and battered face. “LET ME DIE WITH THE PHILISTINES DIE!” [Final Chorus – Explosive, everything unleashed] Samson! Samson! Bow the pillars down! Samson! Samson! Bring the temple to the ground! Greater was his death than all his life before, Redeemed in blood and fire, the Nazirite once more! [Outro – Gregorian chant over collapsing rubble sounds] Et factus est in morte eius plaga maior Quam in vita sua (Judges 16:30 – “Those he killed at his death were more than those he had killed during his life”) Requiescat in pace, fortissime… Amen.
