One face untouched by all these fading years, the only proof still standing past our fears. We met her on the second night out, laughing at something none of us remember now. She laughed like she already sensed the end, like every laugh was a moment she couldn't spend. We didn't know that we were learning her by heart, we thought we'd have more nights before the dark. Same laugh, same walk, same evening chill, same face beside the rail so still. We didn't know that night was all, that "goodnight" would be our final call. Same face, still you, in every dream you wander through. Same face, still you, never aging, never far from view. We carry you the only way we know how — same face, still you, even now. Some of us don't speak of it at all, some of us wake up soaked, hearing her call. Sometimes we catch her at the edge of sight, a flicker gone before we've named the light. The photograph is soft around the frame, but her face refuses to change, still the same. We tell our kids a softer, safer part, we never tell them what still haunts the heart. That night the sea asked no permission at all, it took what it wanted and silenced the call. Left us to carry a face that won't fade, a laugh we still hear in the noise that we've made. Same face, still you, in every dream you wander through. Same face, still you, never aging, never far from view. We carry you the only way we know how — same face, still you, even now. We'll keep this photograph till we're undone, until our own names fade with the setting sun. One face that outlived every year that came, long after we've forgotten our own name.
