[Intro] [Quiet, observational; almost spoken, intimate] You learn a neighborhood by its sounds Who comes home late Who never comes home Which walls talk Which doors stay shut And how fast everybody learns not to listen [Verse 1] [Conversational, restrained; precise imagery, generous space] Walls were thin enough to hear a whole life Mama in the kitchen, daddy yelling all night Glass hit the floor, television got louder Morning came around, everybody played it quieter Ashtray on the table, smoke curling through the room Kids doing their homework while the grown folks chased the fumes Fridge had nothing, but somehow there was money for the habit I learned real young that hunger doesn't always look dramatic Little brother asked me why nobody helped next door I didn't have an answer, just the sound behind the door Woman down the hallway wore sunglasses after dark Everybody saw the bruises, everybody missed the mark She'd say she fell, we'd nod like we believed it Funny how a lie gets comfortable when everybody needs it Somebody'd whisper, "That's just how he gets when he's drinking" Then somebody'd change the subject before you finished thinking [Chorus] [Melodic, haunting; simple hook with sustained vowels] Everybody knew Somebody always knew Everybody heard the walls talk Everybody knew Everybody knew What nobody wanted to say Everybody saw the fire Then looked the other way [Verse 2] [More rhythmic; conversational pocket with increasing internal rhyme] Mr. Charlie knew the whole block, had a theory for the weather Could tell you who was broke, who was high, who wasn't doing better He'd laugh when the screaming started, wave his hand and say, "Boy, that's grown folks' business" Then he'd look the other way Old lady at the window knew exactly who was leaving Counted cars at midnight, knew exactly who was creeping She'd whisper, "Baby, don't you worry," then she'd close the blinds I couldn't tell if she was scared or protecting her mind Older kids had explanations ready before the cops arrived "He was drunk." "She pushed him." "Man, that's just how they survive." Everybody had a reason Everybody had a name Everybody had a version that made silence sound okay Then one night the sirens came, and everybody hit the porches Same event, five stories, all of them sounded important "He started it." "No, she did." "He was trying to protect her." "You don't know what happened." "Man, I heard it from his brother." I stood there listening Trying to separate the truth from the version people needed Learning witnesses can lie without believing it [Chorus] [Stronger melody; subtle harmony enters] Everybody knew Somebody always knew Everybody heard the walls talk Everybody knew Everybody knew What nobody wanted to say Everybody saw the fire Then looked the other way [Bridge] [Drums nearly disappear; exposed, vulnerable delivery] I was just a kid What was I supposed to do? I knew which doors to avoid Which voices meant trouble Which footsteps meant somebody better get quiet I knew when somebody was hurt I knew when somebody was hiding But I didn't know Who was supposed to save them [Long pause] Then I realized something worse Every grown-up knew too [Verse 3] [Controlled intensity; denser rhythmic phrasing, then deliberate pauses] That's the part nobody puts inside the neighborhood story The nights without witnesses The mornings without glory The child who learns to whisper Before he learns to read The one who thinks surviving is the only thing you need Everybody wasn't heartless Everybody wasn't cold Some were scared of losing housing Some were scared of getting old Some were fighting their own demons Some were barely holding on Some convinced themselves that silence Was the same thing as staying calm But somewhere in that silence A lesson settled in my bones You can know somebody's suffering And still leave them alone So I started writing down the things That nobody wanted named Not because I had the answers I just couldn't stand the game If a story disappears Because nobody says it Maybe telling it is how You keep somebody from forgetting [Final Chorus] [Starts intimate; gradually expands into full emotional statement] Everybody knew Somebody always knew Everybody heard the walls talk Everybody knew Everybody knew But knowing ain't enough You can watch somebody drowning And still decide it's not your stuff Everybody knew That's what I remember most Not just what happened But everybody standing close [Outro] [Stripped to nearly nothing; quiet, reflective] I was watching Like I always did Watching who stayed Watching who left Watching who spoke And who didn't [Pause] Everybody knew
