[Verse 1] Ten-thirty in September Nineteen sixty-one Back from Niagara Falls Moon pale, road gone numb South of Lancaster, slow A bright point broke the sky Betty said, "It's falling" But it climbed instead of died [Pre-Chorus] Above the Moon, then west It grew, it flashed, it swerved "Barney, pull the car now" The dark road held its nerve [Chorus] Stay where you are Stay where you are Keep looking, keep looking Stay where you are A silent ring of windows A frozen stare in the dark Stay where you are Stay where you are [Verse 2] At the picnic turnout Delsey on the ground Binoculars caught a shape Spinning without a sound Multicolored on its skin Sliding across the Moon Barney saw the answer No plane could move that soon [Pre-Chorus] Franconia Notch below They crept along the lane Past Cannon Mountain shining Past the old stone face in pain It bounced and drifted closer The highway held its breath A restaurant, a tower Then the road dipped into death [Chorus] Stay where you are Stay where you are Keep looking, keep looking Stay where you are A silent ring of windows A frozen stare in the dark Stay where you are Stay where you are [Bridge] One mile south of Indian Head It dropped toward the hood Barney stopped the Chevy His hand went for the wood Eight to eleven figures Black caps, glossy black One stayed locked on Barney Like it knew the way back [Final Chorus] Stay where you are Stay where you are Keep looking, keep looking Stay where you are A pancake over the highway An eye above his heart Stay where you are Stay where you are [Outro] Red lights, fins unfolding A message in the night Fear in the windshield Then the sky took flight
