Delivery Day

A cardboard box outside the doorway Crossed three oceans overnight Someone packed it under cameras Someone drove it through the night I press five stars for the service Never learn the driver’s name Convenience arrives by morning Someone else absorbs the pain Everything arrives on time Except the life we leave behind Every miracle at the door Has a shadow on the floor I can track it mile by mile Still not see the human cost Nothing ever comes for free Something somewhere pays the loss Warehouses glow like constellations On the edges of the town Hands repeat the same small motion Till the body wears it down I don’t need another promise Wrapped in plastic, shipped by air I just want to know the person Who was working to get it there What if speed is not the answer? What if more will not suffice? What if every small convenience Has another hidden price? Everything arrived on time But I was absent from my life So I opened up the doorway Looked the driver in the eyes For a moment we were equals Not a purchase, not a cost Two exhausted human beings Trying not to become lost
