03-08 | Nosferatu: When Copyright Law Demands Destruction
[Intro] (Moody, scratchy 1920s gramophone intro that suddenly transitions into heavy, fast-paced electro-swing) "Welcome to Wisborg, ignore all the rats! We couldn't afford the rights to the bats!" [Verse 1] In nineteen twenty-two, Prana Film took a chance Albin Grau loved the occult and he wanted to dance! They asked for the rights to the Dracula book But Florence said "No," so they just went and took! They changed up the names, made him Orlok the Count Hoping the legal fees wouldn't surmount! But they put in the program, for all to see "Freely adapted," oh what a decree! [Chorus] (Big, brassy cabaret chorus, highly energetic) Oh, the scariest thing isn't ghosts in the night! It’s a widow protecting her copyright! She marched to the court and she demanded a purge Burn all the film on the funeral dirge! Yeah, they brought in the plague and the Expressionist dread But Florence made sure the production was dead! [Verse 2] Now Max Schreck is playing the creepy undead With big pointy ears on his weird little head! No tuxedo or gel, he’s a rat-looking guy Who waits in the shadows to make people die! Murnau didn't want to get sued for a stake So he made up a rule for the copyright's sake! The vampire burns when he steps in the sun! A whole brand new myth just to make lawyers run! [Bridge] (Tempo drops, sneaky, tip-toeing upright bass and snapping fingers) Prana Film went bankrupt to hide all their cash While the German courts ordered the prints turned to ash! But over in France and the USA land The bootleggers hid the cinematic brand! A loophole in copyright saved the great beast And the rats of Count Orlok survived for the feast! [Chorus] (Max energy, full horn section, driving beat) Oh, the scariest thing isn't ghosts in the night! It’s a widow protecting her copyright! She marched to the court and she demanded a purge Burn all the film on the funeral dirge! Yeah, they brought in the plague and the Expressionist dread But Florence made sure the production was dead! [Outro] (Slow, dramatic, theatrical ending) So if you are stealing a story to sell... Don't put your crime in the program as well! (Sound of a heavy judge's gavel pounding twice) "Case closed!" [End]
