She was born with sun warmed maple skin Curly charcoal hair and emeralds in her eyes A heart of diamond buried deep within That could turn the darkest night into sunrise She laughed like summer, ran barefoot in the grass No mirror yet had taught her what to hate The world still looked like something she could pass Through without measuring her weight She was incredibly pretty How did she not know? 'Cause she was so damn ugly The magazines had told her so At thirteen the posters filled her bedroom wall Thin girls with bones like fragile porcelain dolls She pinched her sides and thought it wasn't enough Started skipping meals to watch her weight fall She spent her allowance on foundations and lies Tried on faces that never quite fit Bought clothes two sizes smaller just to try And still felt like a body that didn't belong in it She was incredibly pretty How did she not know? 'Cause she was so damn ugly The magazines had told her so Page after page of airbrushed skin Plastic smiles and borrowed curves They sold her the lie she lived in And she believed every single word The spiral tightened year by year Ribs like a quiet apology She drew thin lines on her arms when the hunger got too loud Called the blood a kind of honesty Love came knocking but she locked the door Who could possibly want what's broken? No amount of money, no designer store Could buy the self love she had never spoken All the light she carried stayed locked behind the glass Of her own eyes Size zero goddesses and silicon masks Taught her beauty was something you purchase and wear While the real girl starved in the dark, unaware Tear ducts supplying infinite cries She was incredibly pretty How did she not know? 'Cause she was so damn ugly The magazines had told her so No mirror, no price tag high enough Could show her the diamond she already was She was so incredibly pretty But she could only ever see her flaws Sun warmed maple, emerald eyes Still shining somewhere Behind the image
