[Verse 1 – lead] We joked for years he vanished when the nights got loud Slipped away like a shadow just beyond the crowd But there’s a truth beneath the laughter we once knew He was somewhere far from safety Doing what the brave ones do [Verse 1 – background] (doing what the brave ones do) [Chorus – all] He wasn’t there because he served! (because he served!) And went where few men stand! (few men stand!) He said “I’m Dail Milton!” (Milton!) As he held out steady hands! He wasn’t there because he leaped! (because he leaped!) Into storms unknown! (unknown!) First to reach the fallen So none faced it alone! (alone!) [Verse 2 – lead] They say he jumped from helicopters into fire and night Ran toward the wounded when there was no light We were singing in the taverns while he bore the strain Saving souls in foreign shadows So they might see home again [Verse 2 – background] (so they might see home again) [Chorus – all] He wasn’t there because he served! (alone!) [Bridge – chant, printed four times] Raise a glass! (raise a glass!) For the ones who run! (ones who run!) Raise a glass! (raise a glass!) Into the danger done! (danger done!) Raise a glass! (raise a glass!) To the fella brave! (fella brave!) Raise a glass! (raise a glass!) For the lives he saved! (lives he saved!) [Final Chorus – all] He wasn’t there because he served! (because he served!) And went where few men stand! (few men stand!) He said “I’m Dail Milton!” (Milton!) With a courage few command! He wasn’t there because he leaped! (because he leaped!) Into storms unknown! (unknown!) Now the fellas sing his name And we never stand alone! (stand alone!)
