(Verse 1) In the shadowed lands of Beleriand's plain, Where the Union of Maedhros forged its chain, Elves and Men and Dwarves arose as one, Against the Dark Lord's endless night to run. Fingon cried from the hills with voice so clear, "Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!" And all the host in thunderous reply: "Auta i lómë!" The night is passing!" Banners high, hearts aflame with brave desire, They charged forth, kindled by hope's undying fire. (Chorus) Swords clash on Anfauglith's scorched earth, Heroes rise in valor's fierce rebirth. From Hithlum's halls to Himring's stony keep, They storm the gates where shadows darkly creep. But oh, the tears that soon shall fall unnumbered, In wrath and grief, the proud shall be encumbered. (Verse 2) Gwindor's rage ignites the western host, They breach Angband's doors, a fleeting boast. Dwarves of Belegost hold against the flame, Azaghâl wounds Glaurung, claims his fame. Yet treachery stirs in the eastern line, Uldor's kin betray with false design. Orcs and wolves and dragons fill the field, The brave falter, their shields begin to yield. Fingon falls to Gothmog's cruel axe, High King slain, and hope lies trampled there (Chorus) Swords clash on Anfauglith's scorched earth, Heroes rise in valor's fierce rebirth. From Hithlum's halls to Himring's stony keep, They storm the gates where shadows darkly creep. But oh, the tears that soon shall fall unnumbered, In wrath and grief, the proud shall be encumbered. (Verse 3) The plains run red with uncounted slain, Haldir's folk in rearguard, lost in vain. Maedhros scattered, the Union torn asunder, Wrath consumes the hearts once filled with wonder. Balrogs roar and trolls in fury smash, Elves and Men in desperate, vengeful clash. No song can hold the grief that overflows, As hope's bright dawn to endless darkness goes. Yet in the fen, where Serech's waters weep, Two brothers stand, their final vow to keep. (Bridge) Húrin spoke to Turgon, voice unbroken: "For in you lives the last hope of the Eldar." Then Huor, with eyes of death foretoken: "Out of your house shall come the hope of Elves and Men... From you and from me a new star shall arise." Though chains await and curses fill the skies, In desperate grief, a resilient light endures, A somber promise that evil's reign abjures. Farewell, white walls; the night may claim the day, But from this woe, salvation finds its way. (Outro) Thus fell the host in tears beyond all count, Yet from the west a star shall rise and shine. The Valar's grace will cast the Shadow down Aurë entuluva—day shall come again.
