Silence Stole My Youth

I took the long way home tonight, Just to forget the road. The streetlights passed like distant stars, And every step felt cold. I made some choices years ago, I thought that I was right. Now every answer that I found, Just keeps me up at night. I had a friend who called my name, I let him walk away. I had a chance to make things right, But pride got in the way. I kept my words behind my teeth, I swallowed every truth. I thought that silence made me strong, But silence stole my youth. Now there's a chair across the room, That no one sits in anymore. A faded mark beside the frame, A key beside the door. I found an old letter yesterday, It carried no reply. The ink was almost washed away, But I could read the lines. It said, "You don't have to be alone, You don't have to pretend." I wish I had believed those words, Before they reached the end. The years have changed the face I see, The mirror knows my name. But underneath these tired eyes, I'm still the same. I don't need someone to forgive, I need to forgive myself. For every door I left unopened, Every truth I left unsaid. And maybe that's the hardest part, There is no one to blame. Some fires die from lack of rain, Some hearts die from the same. So I'll keep walking through this town, With nothing left to prove. I cannot change the life I lost, But I can choose to move. If tomorrow brings a little light, I'll let it reach my face. I won't erase the man I was, I'll simply leave that place. And if I hear that old song again, I won't turn away. Some memories can hurt like hell, And still be worth the pain. I have no perfect ending, No miracle tonight. Just one more breath, one more step, And maybe I'll be alright.
