Trying to Beat the Rain

[Verse 1] I got mud on my boots And a dime in my hand You left at first light Now I’m still in this land Clouds roll low Like a grudge on the hill I call your name out But the air won’t sit still [Pre-Chorus] Wind on the tin roof Black in the pines I hear that thunder Counting my time I keep on running Lord, I know I’m late Mmm, I’m late [Chorus] Trying to beat the rain (trying to beat the rain) Trying to beat the rain Before it comes down Hold your door for me Don’t let it come down Trying to beat the rain (trying to beat the rain) [Verse 2] Your porch light’s gone dark But I know where you stand Your mama’s old blanket Still folded by your hand Creek run hard By the cut in the clay I lost my good sense At the break of day [Pre-Chorus] Sky gone heavy Like a loaded chain I taste that iron Riding the rain I keep on calling Till my throat gives way Mmm, gives way [Chorus] Trying to beat the rain (trying to beat the rain) Trying to beat the rain Before it comes down Hold your door for me Don’t let it come down Trying to beat the rain (trying to beat the rain) [Bridge] If I reach your steps With the water high Will you let me in Or wave goodbye I brought my sorry And a torn-up coat You got my heart By the throat [Final Chorus] Trying to beat the rain (trying to beat the rain) Trying to beat the rain Before it comes down Hold your door for me Don’t let it come down Trying to beat the rain (trying to beat the rain) Trying to beat the rain Trying to beat the rain
